Salt rising: after you water, the soil is whiter

Water that can’t leave brings the salt back up.

  1. After irrigation dries, a white film; margins worse.
  2. The wet-dry edge is whitest.
  3. Granular fertiliser shows grains; rising salt is an even white crust.
  4. Drought is dry with little or no frost; rising salt gets whiter the more you water.
  5. When to cultivate: Right moisture after a watering. Break the capillary
  6. Name what you see before you feed.
  7. If leaves, roots and the surface disagree, stop.
  8. Water is the lift, salt the passenger.

What you see in the field

After irrigation dries, a white film; margins worse. The wet-dry edge is whitest.Squat on the whitest, worst strip and scrape the crust. Compare with a neighbour that is still green. White crust plus scorched margins count; wilt without a crust may just be drought. Note whether the ditch actually runs.

Why it looks like this

The field looks like this because the root cannot take water or nutrients the usual way. Fix the soil condition first — drainage, salt, acidity, compaction or a salt of fertiliser — then a thin feed. Rates live in the range on this page; confirm with a local station and the label.

Easy to mix up

  • Looks like “Fertiliser that never dissolved”

Granular fertiliser shows grains; rising salt is an even white crust.

  • Looks like “Drought”

Drought is dry with little or no frost; rising salt gets whiter the more you water.

Do this / don’t do that

  1. 1After irrigation dries, a white film; margins worse. The wet-dry edge is whitest.
  2. 2If you irrigate, irrigate through and give an outlet. Mulch and cultivate to cut capillaries. Spring is the season.
  3. 3Don’t follow a drying crust with another tiny drink. Use the range on this page only as a range. Confirm with a local station and the product label.

Don’t do this first

  • Don’t follow a drying crust with another tiny drink.

Rate range

When to cultivate

Right moisture after a watering

Break the capillary.

Cover

Plastic film or straw

Cut evaporation.

These are ranges. Confirm with your local extension station and the product label.

The field timeline

How soon after a spray or a feed it showed

A 1–3 day burst looks more like spray injury / fertiliser burn.

When you see After irrigation dries, test. Mix several spots of the tilled layer; skip the edge and the manure heap.

For learning only. Fertiliser and pesticide decisions need a local agronomist and a soil test.
