Thin organic matter: pale soil that will not hold a ball
Organic matter is a reserve, not a packet of microbes. Build it over years.
- Rub a handful: pale, dusty, will not clump.
- Fertiliser vanishes after one rain.
- Paler year by year usually means a thinner house.
- One microbe bag will not rebuild it in a season.
- Bare winters lose it fastest.
- A neighbour that still clumps is a useful pair.
- A gap greens up this season. A thin house leaks every year.
- Packed is hard. Thin is no meat. A field can be both.
- Rub a handful: pale, dusty, will not clump. Pair it with a darker neighbour.

What you see in the field
Rub a handful of plough-layer soil: pale, powdery, it will not hold a ball and runs through the fingers. Fertiliser after one rain looks as if you never applied it. Bare ground in winter and spring loses this layer fastest. Lay a crumbly handful next to a neighbour ridge that still holds a ball. Pale colour is not a lab number, but pale soil is often thin in organic matter. Sand holds even less. A packet of microbes will not put the lost layer back in one season.

Why it looks like this
Organic matter is decaying and already-decayed organic material. It helps aggregation, water holding and buffering. Taking grain and not returning straw, or burying raw manure, thins the layer. Then fertiliser will not stay, and aluminium or salt hit harder. A microbial product is not the name of this cell. Three years of returned straw and rotted manure beat one overloaded season.

Nitrogen yellows old leaves while roots stay white. Thin organic matter is a pale, crumbly handful; the crop need not yellow in a stripe yet.

A microbial product is not the organic-matter number. The lost layer comes back with returned straw and rotted manure over years.
